Vancouver greeted me with the sunny 12C weather and as we drove through the city and made our way up the spectacular coast towards Whistler, I rolled down my window…mmm… this is what warm spring air smells like!
After freezing Toronto winter, driving on dry road all the way up to Whistler was a treat! No potholes, no ice to watch for and clear windshield.
Our cabin was situated in Alpine Meadows, up 4 km from the Whistler Village, hidden among the tall pine trees. My daily challenge was climbing 102 cedar plank steps to the A shaped cozy A-frame style house with a hypnotizing views of Blackcomb and Whistler mountains.
We started with the Whistler trails, climbing higher as the chairs opened, after the explosives did the job and secured them against the avalanches… reaching Peaks and Harmony lifts.
Then, the Peak-to-Peak gondola opened (it holds world records for the longest free span between the two ropeway towers - 3.03km and and the highest point above the ground - 436m), and we caught the silver one with the glass bottom…
… reaching the Blackcomb side and getting stuck there for the rest of our stay here.
So how do I describe it… plenty of untouched slopes covered in fresh deep powder, light but not too light… and no boundaries, other than your own limits! And the best of all, Horstman Glacier bowl and the steep backside mountain cradling you down the glacier. Around you at all times, a sea of high peaks.
As I was skiing away, the world continued to watch Olympics and Canadian women's and men's hockey teams continued to pave their way to Gold. I felt proud for both of my countries as I was reminded that before Vancouver 2010 there was Sarajevo 1984!
